University of Alabama Medical School (Alabama Medical College) Records

Dr. Josiah Clark Nott founded the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile, Alabama in 1859. Dr. Nott wanted to provide Alabama medical students with a quality education that emphasized scientific and orthodox methods of diagnoses and treatment. In many ways, the college was a response to the large number of profit oriented proprietary schools that existed during the time. In 1907 the University of Alabama assumed control of the college, and it was renamed the University of Alabama Medical School. In 1920 the college moved to Tuscaloosa under much controversy. It moved to its present location in Birmingham in the 1930's.
