Archives : Doctors' Address Books and Ledgers

Most doctors represented in our collection combined their address books and ledgers into single volumes for practical purposes. They often made multiple house calls where several members of the family and/or staff required medical attention. A few doctors further simplified their records by including addresses, amount owed/paid, and diseases and treatments per family member. Some books include deaths and births for the year. NOTE: Books from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries used symbols for visits and procedures. The standard was:

V=office visit
c=call
n.c.=night call
I= one visit/day
X=two visits/day (to same address)
O=office prescription
C=consultation
De=detention
Ope=operation
Obs=obstetrics
S=son
D=daughter
W=wife
Sf=self (usually man of the house/ship captain/or single woman)
St=servant
